The book was very controversial at that time because of the critiques towards the strict Victorian moral code. Overall Tess of the d'Urbervilles is a very good book. The plot itself is terrific. Everyone who has interest in English literature should read this book. It's also worthwhile for people who want to understand about the Victorian morals to read. Though to people who don't like classics, they might be bored by the Victorian style of story telling.
