side of man is released. No one can really understand why evil runs rampant throughout society. Poe does an excellent job on examining this fact on a psychological level. The human psyche is very hard to understand, but through examining Poe's works the reader can get closer to possibly understanding the dark side of man. Perhaps there is no reason to try to understand evil because the causes of human conduct defy intellectual scrutiny (Gargano, 325).
