Lear's banishment of Cordelia could be said to actually block her path to marriage as she has no permission from her father. This theory is based also on the fact that Lear makes clear to Cordelia's potential husbands that she is poor and that they should go for one of his other daughters - blatantly putting an immediate stop to her wedding plans and ultimately on her transition into independence.
