Immediately following this decision, Washington and Rochambeau rushed south with their armies. They stationed approximately 2,500 troops at the American forts near the city under Major General William Heath to fool the British into believing that the only thing left was ruin.All three groups, Lafayette's, Washington's, and Rochambeau's would meet at Yorktown. The plan worked perfectly and the British troops were extremely confused. By the end of September, the 14,000 American troops had confronted Britain's 7,500 troops.
