From childhood's hour I have not been
As others were; I have not seen
As others saw; I could not bring
My passions from a common spring.

This emphasizes the speaker's isolation from the rest of the world. Poe also accomplishes dark images to let the readers think about the "mystery" which he presents during the poem. This "mystery" is unknown and may be dark-threatening the speaker to be isolated from the rest of the world, and so he feels "alone".
