Andrew Johnson's Presidential Life
Andrew Johnson became president in 1829. He became a Greenville alderman along with a tanner and a plaster. Andrew Johnson was the first president to be impeached, and he became chief exeutive upon the assisination of Abraham Lincoln. At the end of the Civil War, Johnson inherited a wartime dispute between Lincoln and congress over how to treat the South after the war.

ex-Confederate general. For the second in time his life, Johnson lost a popular election.
But he won election to the US senate in 1875 and thus became the only former president to some as a senator.
During a visit to Tennessee, Johnson suffered a paralytic stroke. He died a few days later on July 31, 1875. Johnson was burried in Greenville, wrapped in a US flag and with his well worn copy of the constution under his head.
