The affect that they play has an a audience is of sheer sympathy for the protagonist as his mental turmoil is expressed superbly by intermingling different times on the same set, something easy on video but immensely difficult in theatre. The feeling left overall is quite confused when Linda reveals she paid off the mortgage and so Willy's only actual motive to suicide was for the insurance.
