Octavianus at first joined the senate in opposition to Antony but soon broke with the constitutional authorities and in 43 B.C formed the second trimunitive with Antony and Lepidus. Although Octavianus had every reason to be grateful of Cicero, when Antony called for his execution Octavianus had no objections. Cicero then made a half-hearted attempt to escape Italy but was quickly caught outside his villa and met his death with firmness on Dec. 7, 43 B.C.
