Desmond Tutu Archbishop Desmond Tutu was a well known and respected black church leader. He lived in South Africa. The government made it illegal for anyone to oppose it. So Archbishop Tutu called all the religious leaders in South Africa to his cathedral in Cape Town on February 29, 1988. After retiring as Archbishop in 1996 he became Chairperson of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in South Africa, and presided over the traumatic revelation of the secrets of apartheid. He has now taken up a position as Visiting Professor at the Candler School of Theology at Emory University in the USA.
