universal laws contradict themselves? Like in this situation, two laws could contradict themselves. If the student had made the laws: 1. If I make promises, I will keep them. 2. If a friend is in need, I will help them. What is a person to do? I feel that Mill's idea is a far more efficient and realistic one aimed at a larger goal. Although, that is not to say that Mill's thoughts do not have flaws.
