As tensions rose and quickly exploded countries were forced to "dig in", invent or improve armaments, and to seek out an Air Force. Proving to many that this "Great War" definitely would not have a quick ending as at first expected.

to understand where the path of mankind would have led, had all the effort devoted to destruction, been devoted to improving mankind. The First World War was a study in contrasts. On one hand it set new horizons in technology such as aircraft, tanks, and weaponry and on the other front, in the trenches, it reduced mankind to a level of barbaric warfare that did not exist on this scale even in the middle ages.
