As I analyzed Gauguin's painting Where Do We Come From? What are We? Where Are We Going? , 1897 France, there were several things about the piece that struck me as similar and things very different from artists of this time. Gauguin's use of flat and naturalistic color reflects the similar style of Nolde's Saint Mary of Egypt Around the Sinners. in order to articulate a certain mood or expressive tone of death. Another artists who may have been influences by Gauguin is Franz Marc. German Expressionists were all about exploration of color and color theory through expression. Similarly, Marc's Fait of the Animals contains certain colors such as green to represent fertility and then as the colors become muddy and dark on the right side of the painting, they intend to signify death or destruction.
