Is Joseph Conrad a racist?
Joseph Conrad's "Heart of Darkness" is considered by many as a classic, but over the years has presented many problems of interpretation. One of the most famous misinterpretations is Chinua Achebe's misunderstanding of Conrad as a racist. We should not make insane assumptions about Conrad's character simply because he was honest about how the Africans were treated back then. But some people including Achebe criticize Conrad for his honesty and mistake him as a racist. This is a false and inaccurate interpretation, and Achebe's objectivity is hindered by his anti-western bias. In my opinion, after all the occurrences I have mentioned, Conrad appears not to be a racist. I see him as a man caught in a time of some terrible injustice/prejudice, but not a man who exploited a race for his benefit.
