True to his word, Lincoln and the Union survived the war. If Lincoln had simply been a laid back president and not taken such severe actions, the Union would have been destroyed. If Lincoln had been a strict constructionist and followed the Constitution closely, the war also would have been lost. It is only through Lincolns determination (and criminal acts) that the war was won and the Union was preserved.
