The term Bildungsroman is generally applied to a novel about education (in the wide sense), and all round self-development. Most of the best examples of Bildungsroman genre are German. Wieland's Agathan (1765) was the first novel to be classed under the Bildungsroman Genre.
A bildungsroman generally relates to the protagonist in a story who goes on a journey away from home due to a feeling of discontent or loss.

He also realizes how superficial the social classes were in the Victorian era. The book is written from Pip's point of view. The novel it's self is Pips own assessment of his maturing.
