It is often thought that it is St. George who is depicted in the Initial R from the Moralia in Job. St. George is known for being an early Christian Martyr, and also for the tale of his fight with the dragon. Serving Diocletian in the army, he complained, putting his position at risk, when Diocletian began the persecutions of the Christians. He publicly declared himself by tearing down Diocletian's edict against the Christians. The

gave hope to those that were still being persecuted. His tales and acts inspired Christians and converted others. This piece alone is evidence of such inspiration. Luckily though, the artist didn't create this piece any later, for it might never had existed due to Saint Bernard. The illuminated pages in scripture would allow for the illiterate to learn, and gave a way to explain things in a way that you could not do with words.
