Billy lives with his overly macho father and brother, and their increasingly senile grandmother, and so a major mother figure in his life is absent. Billy is seen slightly as the outcast of the family, being the youngest and still at school he isn't involved in the strikes, or the general workings of the family. The film shows Billy's strength through his struggle, and his sexuality is never brought into matter himself, it seems to be everyone else's stereotypes and assumptions in the film that are concerned for Billy. The audience's questioning of his sexuality proves more that society hasn't really changed. Sexuality isn't so overt for everyone, especially eleven year old boys, consequently questioning Billy's sexuality in the film is unattainable, and unnecessary.
