James Rosenquist was born in 1933 in Grand Forks county, North Dakota in a hospital that is now known as the Happy Dragon Chinese Restaurant. His family moved from Grand Forks to Minneapolis in 1944. In 1948 he began his studies of art at the Minneapolis Art Institute and in 1953 he continued his studies of painting at the University of Minnesota.

large oblong compositions. Rosenquist also created large works combining techniques of lithography, screenprinting, etching, and collage. One such piece, the 10.7-m (35-ft) long Time Dust (1992,) features a pop can and a French horn that seem to float in space. The fascination of Rosenquist's work lies in the fact that they can lead you into a realm of ideas, the immense size can almost engulf you and the nostalgic feel of the pieces strangely bring comfort.
