Much can be learned about Shakespeare's Juliet from the text of the play. Capulet describes her as "yet a stranger in the world" (1.2.8) and she is not yet fourteen years old, as seen in "She hath not seen the change of fourteen years" (1.2.9). This implied naivete due to her age and situation is often focused on by players of Juliet. Holland also notes that "Juliet...as a young unmarried woman, is firmly kept indoors" (Holland. 38)

e Nurse's frequent attempts at delaying the news, Juliet demands, "No, no! But all this did I know before. / What says he of our marriage? What of that?" (2.5.44-45). Her voice must also be sweet and persuasive, particularly when she realises the Nurse is intentionally delaying the news, and tries to cajole the Nurse, saying "I'faith, I am sorry that thou art not well. / Sweet, sweet, sweet nurse, tell me, what says my love?" (2.5.53-54).
