'King Lear' by William Shakespeare is the story of the king of Britain and his three
daughters. There is also an underlying plot involving the Earl of Gloucester and his two
sons. The two plots while separate, are mingled together to create one story. 'The mingling

Gonerill, as Lears daughters, decieve and
manipulate their fathers for their own personal gain. They show and equal cruelty and lack
of compassion towards their family. These parallel characters accentuate the idea of
cruelty and unkindness and adds to the complexity of 'King Lear'.
The intertwining of two plots in 'King Lear' creates a great depth and complexity within the
story. The two plots create an emphasis and complexity to the ideas of the play.
