Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated April 4, 1968 by a sniper. News of his assassination prompted riots in more than 100 cities of the United States. In 1969 James Earl Ray pleaded guilty to the killing of Martin Luther King Jr., and was sentenced to 99 years in jail.
