Who is he? Mercutio is one of Romeo's best friends, (the other being Benvolio) and also related to the Prince Escalus.
Mercutio first appears with the 'maskers' in Act 1 Scene 4, when he delivers his 'Queen Mab' speech and persuades Romeo to take part in the dance/party and renounce his idea of being merely a torchbearer. He next appears with Benvolio, in search of Romeo after the party.

with his film because although he has stuck to Shakespeare's original play, at the same time he has made a modern version, which to me is more interesting and makes me want to keep watching. Whereas in the Zeffirelli film it is quite boring and makes my concentration slip.
So overall I prefer Luhrman's film and especially the way he shows Mercutio's wit and state.
