through an assassination attempt in his third year as pope, he helped bring around the fall of the USSR, a feat no man of lesser perseverance could accomplish. Trying to bring each president to sue for peace in the Gulf War, he sent many pleas to Presidents Hussien of Iraq and Bush of the United States.
