Giselle is represented by two different ballet companies, in different eras by different choreographers. The romantic version was danced by the Australian Ballet and choreographed by Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot. It was choreographed and set in the early 1800's but performed in 1841, then later rechoreographed by Marius Petipa. I feel that dance styles can be placed on a time line like structure such as Jazz, Ballet, modern etc and contemporary comes across as this sinister, pathetic, in-between style of dance that looks unprofessional. Contemporary portrays the ugly as well as the beautiful? What is Ballet? Ballet is meant to be full of grace and beauty and I feel that contemporary is simply defeating the purpose of ballet.
