The rebels were captured, including Shays, and were sentenced to death for treason. Fortunately, charges were dropped and all men were pardoned. Remnants of Shays's movement sparked James Madison's Federalist paper number ten and the idea of an extended republic. In addition, it strongly influenced the Second Continental Congress to create an indirect Democracy in the new constitution.
