It appears the slave-owners would like an intelligent slave, but not too intelligent like Aesop. Thus, they are torn between "a desire to exploit his slave's intelligence and the desire to flog him into senseless submission." Likewise, the slave has to decide whether to serve the master loyally with the hope of freedom, or with dumb insolence and revenge.
