What is a Super Infection?
Super infection results from organisms that become resistant to the drugs previously used to treat them. This condition has been speculated to be caused, in part, by the over use/misuse of antibiotic therapy.
Transmission:
 Primarily transmitted by colonized/infected patients and health care workers and contaminated equipment.
 Inadequate hand washing by hospital staff has been implicated in the spread of these pathogens among patients at risk.

Diagnosis:
VRE is diagnosed through stool and rectal swabs. If a person exhibits no s/s they are said to be colonized not infected. However, a person that is colonized has a 10% greater chance of developing VRE infection secondary to another illness.
Treatment:
None. The CDC has developed a two level system of isolation.
1. The first level is standard precautions.
2. The second calls for transmission precautions.
