Depression and Suicide
In the early 19th century there developed a concern over the rising rates of suicide. Suicide became the subject of medical and social investigations. More and more efforts were made to identify the conditions leading to such self-destructive behavior, develop ways to treat suicidal patients, and to have statistics for further research.

Out of these figures, many are not quite sure just how many people attempt to end their lives but do not succeed or follow through with it. Experts believe that out of ten people who attempt to commit suicide only one succeeds. During the past ten years there has been an increase in self-destructive behavior among adolescents, which has now become a national issue.
