thickened, her left hand on the ivory head of her cane, the large diamonds on the ring finger and the tone of her commanding voice laying down the rules to the house. In a way, she kind of describes someone royalty like a queen. In the end of chapter three, the narrator sets the tone for chapter four of expectations now that she recognizes who the Commander's Wife is and what to expect from her.
