I think that Dally is the hero of the book. He helped Johnny and Ponyboy hide after they had killed Bob. He gave them a gun (heater) and fifty dollars and told them to hide out at the old church in Windrixville till it all blew over. "Hop the three-fifteen freight to Windrixville.
"There's an old abandoned church on top of Joy Mountain" (page 74).
This shows that he cares for them and their safety.

how divided the two groups are. It shows how far the greasers and Socs will go to prove themselves. This is the same in society today where groups use violence to express themselves. For example the Cronulla riots where white Australians and Muslims clashed at the beach. I think this shows how groups can become more violent than individuals. They encourage each other, though as individuals they wouldn't be involved in this level of violence.
