Waking: Poems 1933-1953 (1953). He was also given the National Book Award for the publication of the last poems before his death in The Far Field (1964). Roethke touched his reader with an unfathomable psychology in obscure connections to nature and delves into clinical depression. Truly, he was a man that was smitten but still never disenchanted by brilliance. He maintained admirable degree of passion and appreciation for life that is unparalleled by most contemporary American poets.
