Pimpernel had tricked Chauvelin yet again.
What I learned from this book is not to judge by appearances. Marguerite despised her husband for his stupidity but never took the time to look closer. When she did she realized how much she loved him. Chauvelin treats people see sees as not being equal to him meanly and with hatred. This was his downfall. If he had treated them nicer he probably would have caught him faster.
