The Divine Comedy, despite its religious and political undertones, remains a piece of literature which can be considered to be a poem. When viewed in this manner, it is made possible for the reader to realize the connection between evil and good. The book "Inferno" is a depiction of Dante's journey through hell. go the way he wishes, to pursue his own desires... obviously not God's will. He tells Dante to follow the inclinations towards subjective appetites, the exact sin which landed Brunetto in Hell. Brunetto was knowingly attempting to lead Dante in the same direction through his negligent advice. Dante, however, had good sense and did not take his advice. Dante continued his interaction with Brunetto because of all the help he gave Dante during his childhood.
