TRAIL OF TEARS
The first problem that happened among the Cherokee Indians and the United States was a treaty that said that the Cherokees owned land in four US states, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, and North Carolina. The white settlers who lived in these areas did not like the Cherokees living with them and complained to the US government to have the Cherokee Indians forced to different lands.

Most of the Cherokee Indians traveled hundreds of miles to their new settlement in the West. Their journey is now called the Trail of Tears because of the great suffering they experienced along the way. Approximately 2000 Cherokee Indians died along the route.
Before European settlers landed in North America there were about 10 million native Americans. Within the next 300 years, 90% of them were wiped out by disease, hunger, and wars.
