The Trenches: Dug in to house men before the decisive battle. But they were stalemated and the trenches were around for years. German trenches were up to 12 metres deep and used concrete to reinforce. British were never as good - they preferred to be offensive and didn't expect the trench warfare to last as long as it did. Lice: Not a soldier in the trenches who didn't have live. They tormented men, in their hair and clothes. Resistant to all forms of control. Constant scratching causes the skin to break and sores develop. Unhygienic conditions caused infection.
Rats: Sometimes the size of small dogs they would feed on the dead. They would also try feed on sleeping soldiers. Soldiers would compete who could kill the most rats and often named their favorite rats.
