According to J.J.C. Smart, utilitarianism is a theory that all actions are judged by their consequences. The following paper will deal with two forms of utilitarianism: 1) extreme utilitarianism, and 2) restricted utilitarianism. J.J.C. using the work of J.J.C. Smart, the issues and beliefs surrounding these two theories were presented. After much review on the work of Mill, this paper discussed the possible responses to the criticisms Smart laid out. The current author believes that each theory (extreme and restricted) of utilitarianism has valid points, however rather than side with one, perhaps it would be best to apply a combination of the two to our daily lives.
