As a reaction to rapid industrialization, many reforms were needed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. With railroads raising prices for short distance rides and the high cost to ship goods farmers found their funds to be insufficient and crops began to fail. The new problems that farmers faced caused them to have to move and find new techniques in crop production. Eventually laws were passed to help regulate the prices of railroads.

helped farmers in 1887 by prohibiting unfair practices by railroads (charging more for shorter routes). This established the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) to enforce laws.
As results in the Progressive Era, the life of farmers were changed very drastic and they went thought hard times to get a fair chance to make a living. Many laws were changed to fit the needs of farmers so that they are not left to suffer from big business monopolies.
