General George Wade (1673-1748) only began building roads aged 54 after investigating how serious the threat of the Scottish rebellion was. He reported back that the road conditions would make the journey difficult for troops and decided to help build roads in the Scottish highlands.

I also think that John Loudon Macadam was very successful as he used small chips of stone which moulded together under the weight of the road traffic. This formed a smooth, water tight surface for the roads. Macadam was also very economic, saving money where he could, building good quality roads meaning that fewer repairs would be needed later on.
