I also think that John Loudon Macadam was very successful as he used small chips of stone which moulded together under the weight of the road traffic. This formed a smooth, water tight surface for the roads. Macadam was also very economic, saving money where he could, building good quality roads meaning that fewer repairs would be needed later on.
