William Tecumseh Sherman was born in Ohio on February 8, 1820 to Charles R. Sherman and Mary Hoyt Sherman. He was the sixth of ten children. Those with him were his children Cumpy, Minnie, Elly, Lizzie, and Rachel. Generals Slocum and Howard waited in a room outside. Sherman's family was Catholic, but he himself expressed no belief in God.
