Wrapping up, Joe "Jody" Starks as a husband is mentally and physically abusive. After captivating Janie and making her his wife Jody moves onto bigger and better things. In the process he tramples Janie and their marriage. Janie marries for love whereas Jody Starks marries purely for prestige and power. Janie's inability to fit into Jody's expectation that a wife should be seen and not heard causes the fissure that ultimately kills Jody Starks.
