Theodore Roosevelt was born in New York City in 1858, the second of four
brothers and sisters. Although blessed with a quick mind he was not blessed with a
strong body. He suffered from life-threatening asthma attacks throughout his childhood.
Urged on by his father, Theodore began to build up his body by strenuous exercise, and
by adulthood he had become a model of physical courage and toughness. This early

old. In 1918 he was hospitalized and he lost the hearing in one ear. The death of his
youngest son, Quentin, in WW1 had been a severe blow. Roosevelt remained active to
the end and died in his sleep at his Oyster Bay home in 1919. To this day Theodore
Roosevelt is remembered as one of the strongest and most vigorous presidents in United
States history.
